Ultrasonic level measurement

In non-contact ultrasonic level measurement, the sensor emits ultrasonic pulses in the direction of the medium, which then reflects them back. The elapsed time from emission to reception of the signals is proportional to the level in the tank. Ultrasonic sensors are ideal for simple standard applications, both for liquids and for solids.

Continuous level measurement in liquids and bulk solids with ultrasonic level sensors

Level measurement with ultrasonic sensors is a reliable and cost-effective method for measuring the level of liquids and bulk solids. The measuring principle is characterised by simple commissioning, non-contact and wear-free operation and a long service life. This technology is based on the transit time measurement of ultrasonic pulses, which are reflected on the surface of the medium and then detected by the sensor.

How is the fill level measured with ultrasonic sensors?

Level measurement with ultrasonic sensors works on the basis of transit time measurement. For ultrasonic level measurement, the device is mounted on top of a container or tank. It is aligned vertically downwards onto the surface of the medium to be detected. The procedure is described here in several steps:

  • Emitting ultrasonic pulses: The sensor cyclically emits short, high-frequency ultrasonic pulses into the room.
  • Reflection on the surface: When the ultrasonic pulse hits the surface of the medium, it is reflected and returns to the sensor as an echo.
  • Time measurement: The sensor measures the time between the emission of the pulse and the reception of the echo signal.
  • Distance calculation: The sensor calculates the distance to the medium from the measured time.
  • Level calculation: Due to the known tank geometry, the level of the medium can be calculated by subtracting the distance travelled from the total level height.

This method is contactless, maintenance-free and unaffected by the physical properties of the medium, such as the dielectric constant, density or moisture. This makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications, such as level measurement of liquids and bulk solids.

What to look out for when using ultrasonic level measurement?

When using ultrasonic sensors for level measurement, there are a few aspects to consider in order to ensure reliable and accurate measurement:
